The Pueblo Native Americans preceded the Spanish, who founded Santa Fe in 1610. Their maltreatment of area Native Amreicans was directly responsible for the Pueblo Revolt in 1680.
Today Santa Fe's tri-cultural population - Hispanic, Native American and Anglo - still heavily influences the city. Each of the cultures honor their arts and history with some of the world's most successful art and cultural events, including:
- The Santa Fe Indian Market
- The Santa Fe Opera
- The Santa Fe Desert Chorale
- The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival
- The Moving People Dance Theater
- and other events too numerous to mention
Santa Fe also hosts one of the oldest ongoing annual festivals - the Santa Fe Fiestas. Since 1712, Santa Feans have celebrated at this event that relives city's past with parades, events, and, in more recent history, the burning of "Old Man Glloom" or Zozobra, a huge paper machet puppet who writhes in gloomy theatrics as he meets his doom.
New Mexico became a state in 1912, and Santa Fe is the oldest capitol city in the United States.
The story of Santa Fe is the story of diverse peoples and dramatic events. Our beautiful building designs pay homage to the beauty and elegance of the area's Pueblo architecture. We have endless skies, sunlight, and dramatic landscapes, making the area a favorite of outdoorsmen, artists, and all who desire a lifestyle surrounded by beauty.
